An incredible concept that is mined for everything it’s got, without ever running flat, this multiverse jumping romp is one of the year’s best.
What will make EEAAO stand the test of time is its focus put on the universal theme of family. Characters have their own flaws that they must rectify and there are relationships between the family that must not be avoided and must be fixed. Michelle Yeoh gives a stellar performance as Evelyn Wong, who has continued to ignore her husbands want for her love and her daughter’s want for her support and acceptance. While in the opening minutes she believes she is doing enough for her daughter, Joy, by being accepting of her sexuality, she doesn’t realise that the problem is really in the fact she doesn’t show Joy her support or love. Ke Huy Quan’s performance as Waymond is the heart of the film as the loving father and polar opposite to Evelyn, who doesn’t know how much more he can willingly give to the people he loves when they have spent so long ignoring him. The Daniels show off their talents as a duo, paying homage to different genres and directors, most notably Wong-Kar-Wai, but while simultaneously keeping their unique voice present throughout.
